Carrying around emotional baggage can often times be life limiting and feel like you are living in a prison that you can't get out of. Wouldn't it be great if you were free to be alive again? You can!
Hello! My name is Kara Corbett and I live in Minerva, Ohio. I originally went to Kent State University where I earned my B.A. in Criminal Justice Studies before beginning my career as a 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Specialist, where I spent almost 14 years. After a long period of burnout, (which I now know was caused by my unresolved grief!) I decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in Funeral Directing and Embalming from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science (PIMS) and became licensed in 2021.
Growing up I suffered some typical losses of pets, grandparents, etc., however I also was adopted by my step-dad and raised by both he and my mom. As a result, everyone on my paternal side of my family was taken out of my life. I was too young to understand, and my parents were not educated in how this would affect me later. I was told by all of the medical professionals that something was wrong with me, and that I had a “chemical imbalance”. This then led to years of being medicated, which never solved any problems, but made them worse.
It wasn’t until during my schooling to become a Funeral Director that I took a class on the Psychology of Grief, where I learned (intellectually-at least) that there never was anything actually “wrong with me”, I just hadn’t ever grieved any of my losses from growing up! This in itself was life changing, however even though I learned what the problem was, I didn’t know what to do about it. I was stuck in a cycle of depression and anxiety for years.
I am so thankful to have been led to the Grief Recovery Method where I learned actual tools that were effective in moving me through my grief (emotionally this time!) so that I could feel lighter and happier, and I am so excited to bring this method to help you too! I have a passion for helping not only grieving families during times of the death of a loved one, but also educating adults in helping children navigate their grief, and for all of our first responders too. I have found that they especially have a harder time of finding support or being able to talk about their losses due to the unique position of the jobs they work to keep us safe. We need to help our helpers!
I typically provide both the 8-week group and 7-week one-on-one Grief Recovery Method programs, as well as the four-session program, Helping Children with Loss.

Our support groups offer a safe, evidence-based environment for grievers to take effective and lasting action, no matter the type of loss experienced. These groups are led by Grief Recovery Method Specialists, trained and certified by the Grief Recovery Institute.
