Hello! My name is Helen Skormisley and I am a Grief Recovery Specialist. Like so many of you, I have experienced many kinds of grief and have walked the difficult path of recovery. It took quite a few years to realize that I did not have to go through this experience alone. During a particularly difficult experience of loss many years ago, I was fortunate my path led me to a compassionate Grief Therapist who helped me live through my grief. This inspired me to do the same for others. I later became a Grief Therapist doing what I could to support others. I then discovered the Grief Recovery Method and knew this would be a wonderful addition to skills I already possessed. So, I completed the Specialist Training Program the summer of 2020. The Grief Recovery Method has given me many valuable approaches to support and guide others as they process their experiences of grief and loss. A great advantage of the Grief Recovery Method is that programs are specific to various types of loss as well as to different age groups. They are tailored to address the deep emotional pain grief brings and lead individuals to lasting healing.
In additional to being a Grief Recovery Specialist, I am a Sister of St. Joseph, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Jungian psychotherapist specializing in Grief Therapy and Dreamwork, Certified Trauma Therapist, and Board-Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner. I am certified in Spiritual Direction and Dream Work Training from the Haden Institute Asheville, NC and Niagara Falls, Canada and in Gerontology from West Virginia University. I have devoted myself to the study and practice of dream work for the last thirty-five years in my own life and with others in groups and individually. Over the last five years, I have studied the Transformative Power of Grief and the connection between grief and dreams. Other areas of interest and expertise are trauma, spiritual development, gerontology and end-of-life issues.
I provide in-person Group and One-On-One Grief Recovery Method Programs in the Wheeling and Morgantown WV regions. I currently facilitate the Adult Bereavement Support Group and am a Consulting Board Member at the WV Family Grief Center in Morgantown, WV. I also offer dreamwork, spiritual direction, retreats and programs in Spirituality, Grief, and Dreams at the St Joseph Retreat Center in Wheeling, WV, other locations in WV, and through online platforms.
