Our young daughter’s best friend, a wonderful little old girl who was a close friend to our family, died unexpectedly. This was traumatizing for our entire family and everyone that knew her, but our daughter was especially impacted since she’d lost her best friend and experienced mortality so intensely for the first time. She had a lot of questions and grief and began struggling in school. We were trying to get her counseling and therapy from several places to find anything that would help, and one of the therapists we brought her to recommended that rather than only getting our daughter therapy, that we (my wife and I) also take this grief therapy group course to help both ourselves and be better positioned to help our kids. We weren’t sure at first if we would have the time or inclination to participate, but it turned out to be a wonderful and helpful experience. Thank you.

It has immensely improved the relationship and ability to parent my son. It has helped us work through our losses and grieve appropriately, in a very effective technique.

I now have knowledge on how to help my children cope with their grief, and how to help them through their real feelings! I know what to say in situations OR just sit and listen to their feeling without talking! I learned Not to replace the loss with other things! I am now equipped to help my own children with difficult situations in life that no one seems to want to talk about. I am looking forward to helping my children with the difficulties of life, instead of only looking forward to the happy & good times!

The program facilitator was Bryan Hutton, he was very knowledgeable and was able to explain in detail in areas where i needed more examples and further explanation. Bryan showed professionalism whilst being emphatic.

The program allowed me to reflect back on how people viewed and spoke about lost and how when done differently we get different results.

I have used the Grief Recovery Method on myself before with a Clinical Psychologist. I have experienced multiple bereavements in a short space of time and this course helped me to navigate further discussion with my children, all of whom have different methods of dealing with grief and loss of the same people. I have been able to use some of the tools learnt on the course within my personal and professional settings and have noticed the benefits.

The program ('it') helped me look at grief in a completely different way (vs only a death). The "never ask for forgiveness" was another concept that I now look at in a completely different/better way ("make an apology instead"). It helped me remember things and those things were ones that gave be a more balanced view of the other person. It led me to a place where I could see my role in the situation with clarity - and to accept the Grace available to me so that I could heal more and judge less. It also taught me new/better ways of communication with others and strengthened my empathy for myself; showing me that I also needed to forgive and love myself as well at the other. Understanding my STERBs not looking at them as faults but rather as something I can change if I really want to (these STERBs do not control me, they work but only short term which is not good enough for me, and so if I really want what I say I want I can work towards lessening the hold they have on me (one little step at a time). Another big step was validation of the truth that we are the architects of our own discomfort (something I knew but didn't understand the degree in which it actually is a broader truth vs. a hunch, and that I have more control over changing it than I had been willing to acknowledge). I learned that if you discount it you have given yourself the okay to be a victim vs. the author of your healing. Learning the difference between Guilt and wishing things could have been Different, Better, or More (and recognizing them as tools to help bring visibility to what is incomplete). And it's very interesting that this attitude of responsibility for our own feelings and actions starts with very early "influence learning". It's a way to get stuck, not a way to release what chokes us. The program opened my eyes to Cumulative Loss and the effects on my health and happiness. It is a great reminder to share positive thoughts and feelings as they occur vs. waiting until it is too late. And lastly release the need to fix yourself and others - be willing to go through the process and allow others to do the same (we are all unique).
