You Aren't Promised Tomorrow

Grief Unexpressed emotions drunk driving teenage loss death

A few years ago I lost a dear college friend, Esteban, to a drunk driving accident. When I received the news, I was engulfed in a fog for about 30 minutes. As I emerged from that haze, I began to reflect on our relationship. I realized there were so many things that I never told to him: ways I appreciated him, fond memories, and significant events. As a 19-year-old college kid, expressing feelings to another guy didn't seem cool, and now, I feel robbed of that opportunity.

Have you experienced similar emotions and circumstances? So much unresolved emotional pain stems from undelivered communications—everything you wished had happened differently, better, or more in your relationships.

Unresolved emotions accumulate over time, weighing heavily on your heart. Whether it's with people who are still living or people who have passed away, undelivered emotional communications don't disappear; they burden you and limit your life. If it becomes too overwhelming, you might become a shell of your former self. That’s no way to live.

So, what can you do?

Every day, whether it's for those who have passed or those still living - if someone enters your heart or mind, identify what you want to say to them and and reach out. If they are still alive, text them, call them, or tell them how you feel. Remember, tomorrow isn't promised to any of us. You don't want to be left holding the bag of unspoken words. By expressing your feelings, you uplift yourself and the person you communicate with.

For instance, I recently thought of one of my mentors while I was working out. This mentor taught me so much about business, interacting with people, being a dad, and being a husband. He had a massive impact on my life. I texted him, expressing my appreciation. This brought me immense joy and also uplifted him. It was all true and heartfelt, and I felt a significant win that day by expressing my gratitude.

So, give it a shot. You know how busy life can get with daily distractions, but take the time to express your feelings to those who matter. You'll find it brings you and them peace and fulfillment.
